The outcome of the 2024 Presidential and Congressional election in the United States will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences for the entire world. But if you’re reading this, you probably recognize the impact. While I feared this outcome might be possible, I could not in my heart allow myself to believe it would come to this. I did not believe that a plurality of voters could overlook the millions of reasons not to usher in a new world order. But here we are.

Finding Freedom
The rising nationalism, racism, sexism, and climate change denialism in the US is one of the reasons we had to leave when we did. The values of the majority of the voting public are simply no longer in alignment with our own. While the future is unknown, there is certainly an increased chance that the United States has just become even more dangerous for those of us who don’t fit the Project 2025 narrative.
The natural solution for us once realizing this could happen was to make a shift to a safer place where we felt our lives would improve. We moved to find freedom. Freedom from gun violence, aggressive bullying, and an attitude of self above community. We found it and we are truly blessed to experience all of our feelings of mourning for what might have been with our feet firmly planted in our safe place.
So now what can we do? We cry, we rage, we organize, we help where we can, and we commit to threading the needle in our communities. We must become connectors and uplifters for one another.
And for some of us, maybe we make a more drastic change because we have cultivated the privilege of opportunity and nurtured risk-taking in our lives.
Thinking About Moving to Portugal?
I know it’s early days but if you’re thinking about making a big change too, Portugal is a very good place to start and we’re here for you. We’ve always got a spare bed and the lease agreement you need to satisfy your D7 visa or D8 visa application. Either way, take care of yourself and try to help someone if you can. It’s all we can really do.
